As I’ve preached in previous posts, your oral health depends on regular flossing – simply brushing is not enough. For most of use, our dental care needs can be taken care of with a few common household items: a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, and rinse. Keep in mind that I said most of us. There is also that segment of society that likes to think outside the box – sometimes WAY outside of the box. It is precisely these people that must have inspired the great people at TrendHunter.com to compile a fantastic list of “37 Tooth and Dental Innovations”. You won’t believe what they found.

Really. A company called IntelliDrug has developed a tooth implant that stores your medications in liquid form and delivers a doctor-programmed shot at timed intervals. Wow. Check out IntelliDrug’s innovation.

Tooth or Consequences

If you’re not sure how to answer this question, that’s OK. In fact, most of us don’t have a clue what our mouth says about us. However, WebMD.com has created a cool widget that tries to help you answer this question. They cleverly call this widget “Tooth or Consequences“.

How it Works

The concept is actually rather simple. You’re asked to respond to questions about a series of factors that may affect the healthiness of your mouth. For instance, they’ll ask you if you smoke, how often you go to the dentist, if you eat sweets, and so on. With each question, you’re visually reminded of the damage that’s being done to your teeth as a result of your habits on a big pair of virtual chompers.

Results

I was surprised to see that according to this widget my teeth should be pretty yellow based on my habits. Well, they aren’t thankfully. That goes to show that you should not rely on this little widget to assess your oral health condition. Only a trained dentist can do that. So, have fun, but don’t get bent out of shape if the big chompers turn brown on you.

Zapi Makes the “O” List

While the economy is down in the dumps, and most of us are scaling back for the holidays, Violight, makers of toothbrush sanitizers are sure to have a Christmas they won’t soon forget. Why? Their best-selling toothbrush sanitizer, Zapi, was recently featured as one of Oprah’s “Favorite Things” for the holidays by O Magazine. With millions of readers around the world, and additional coverage by Good Morning America, the Zapi is getting some major press this holiday season.

The Zapi is an egg-shaped device that utilized UV rays to kill germs crawling all over your toothbrush in minutes. Just one tap on the power button each day is all it takes. It even comes in three colors: green, blue, and orange. This is for the more paranoid among us, but I wouldn’t say it’s a bad idea. It’s especially good for traveling, and retails for $29.99. If you have kids, you’ll probably want to check out a site that was brought to my attention the other day. The site, listerinekids.com, is a resource dedicated to educating us about the various ways in which we can get our childrens’ dental health on the right track from a young age.

Advice by Age Group

The dental health needs of children are different than those of adults. So, listerinekids.com has provided advice for parents of children in three different age groups: 6-7, 8-10, 11-12. I can’t quite figure out why they didn’t create an age group for younger children, but this is a start.

Games

Your kids can even play a game called “Mission Magnitizer” that purports to teach them the importance of good oral hygiene. Not sure how effectively it drives home that message, but I had fun playing it, and I’m well above any of the target age groups.

Product Recommendations

Another feature found on listerinekids.com is their product recommendation section. Of course, they only recommend Listerine products, so keep that in mind. But, I suspect that many of you purchase listerine rinse products anyway. So, it’s nice to know which products are appropriate for each age group.

Final thoughts

While listerinekids.com isn’t likely to win any awards just yet, it’s one of the few dental health sites I’ve seen dedicated entirely to children. So, if you’re clueless about your kids’ dental care needs, and the proper way of maintaining their dental health, it’s worth a look.

Delta Dental has launched what it has dubbed “The 10,000 Smiles Project.” The concept here is simple. Delta wants to collect 10,000 photos of people smiling. That’s it. If you have a picture of yourself smiling, submit it. Why? Well, if Delta reaches their goal of receiving 10,000 photos of people smiling, they will donate $10,000 to the National Head Start Program, an organization that helps to develop vulnerable and underprivileged children. This is a good cause and it only takes a couple of seconds to submit a photo. So, submit one if you can.

If you’re anything like me, you like to do as much research as possible prior to making important decisions – such as choosing a new dentist. Luckily, there are a number of great websites online that point you to available dentists in your area. I’ve selected 5 such sites that I find particularly useful when conducting a search for local dentists.

1. 1800Dentist.com

1800dentist.com is probably the most well-known dental directory on the web. You’ve probably even seen a few of their commercials. I particularly like their service because they pre-screen dentists prior to placing them in their directory. This isn’t foolproof, but it is an added layer of protection that certainly doesn’t hurt.

2. Dentists.com

I was impressed by the number of results I received for dentists near me. In fact, Dentists.com returned 15 results for dentists within 10 miles of me. They’re not pre-screened, however.

3. Americasmiles.com

Americasmiles.com is not pretty, and not nearly as comprehensive as 1800dentist.com or Dentists.com, but I do like that it allows you to select a search radius. Not pre-screened.

4. Everydentist.com

Everydentist.com is on par with dentists.com in terms of the volume of search results you can expect. I particularly like that Everydentist.com allows searches by zip(with search radius), city, or dentist’s last name. Not pre-screened.

5. DentistDirectory.com

A search at DentistDirectory.com returned fairly comprehensive results – on par with Dentists.com and EveryDentist.com. I’m particularly impressed with how this dentist search engine tries to help you located dentists in your are that accept online appointment booking. Unfortunately, there were no dentists in my area currently doing this, but it’s a neat feature for the future. Not Pre-screened.

Google Test

Once you have found a handful of dentists in your area, I would first Google each of their names. This is a great way to filter out the “bad apples” right off the bat. If a particular dentist has some dirty laundry, it’s likely that someone has taken the time to write about it on the web. A quick Google search will uncover their dirty deeds.

Questions to Ask a New Dentist

For those dentists that have passed the Google check, there are a number of questions that I would ask each of them prior to making a selection. Tammy Davenport has put together a comprehensive list of questions to ask prior to selecting a new dentist. Of course, you will have to determine whether the prospective dentist answered the questions to your satisfaction, but this list will provide you with a great starting point in finding a great dentist near you.

One neat feature that you’ve probably seen on other shopping sites around the web is some sort of rating and/or review system that’s in place to help you make an informed buying decision. Dentek.com is the only dental product website I’ve seen that provides this service to their users. Personally, I like buying from companies that provide this kind of transparency for their customers. As a bonus for your participation, you’re eligible for special discounts on Dentek® products.

Product Information

Another strength of Dentek.com is the vast product information they provide customers. Unlike many dental product sites I’ve seen, Dentek.com provides very useful product information and usage instructions for each product so you know which product is the right one for you. There’s nothing worse that purchasing a product online only to find out it isn’t what you were looking for.

Consumer Education

One nice feature on Dentek.com that’s constantly growing is their Education Center. Here you will find educational dental care videos, a reference library, links to dental authority sites, and an extensive Q&A section. I definitely look forward to seeing this section grow – especially the video section.

Dentek Professional

If you’re a professional and want to shape the future of dental products, the Dentek® Professional section on Dentek.com is the place to do it. It’s time for another installment of “cool dental links“. The links are still “cool”, but I’m going to change the name to “Weekend Dental Links” because, you guessed it, I’ll be featuring them on the weekends. I’m only human, so I like to relax a bit on the weekends, and this should give you some reading material while you’re hopefully relaxing on the weekends as well. So, without further ado…

The Links

1. The current condition of the U.S. Economy is hitting everyone hard, not just those of us living in the United States – as confirmed by the antics of a German dentist recently. According to telegraph.co.uk, a German dentist recently broke into a woman’s house, tied her hands, and forcibly removed bridges from her mouth that her insurance company refused to pay for. 2. A new handheld 3D-imaging technology, called iTero, is allowing Prosthodontists to offer virtual molding to their patients in lieu of the messy, bad-tasting mold material we’re used to. The 3-D technology is currently available in a number of states and is expected to expand in the near future.

3. Colgate has recently warned consumers of counterfeit toothpaste distributed under their name. The counterfeit toothpaste has been imported from South Africa, and contains a harmful ingredient known as diethylene glycol, a chemical found in antifreeze. Read more about Colgate’s warning.

As much as I try to avoid celebrity talk on Dental Heroes(plenty of other blogs for that, right?), I couldn’t pass up telling you about a quiz I just found on the ABC News website called,
“Guess the Celebrity Smile”.

Just as the name of the quiz implies, you’re asked to match celebrity smiles with the proper celebrity. The quiz takes about 5 minutes, so it won’t take up too much of your time. I just took it and scored an 8 out of 10. Guess I need to start reading my tabloids…err…maybe not.

1. Ever wonder what dental clinics of the future might look like? Well, the KU64 Dental Clinic in Berlin may just provide us with the answer. This 10,180 sq ft clinic looks more like a chic hotel lobby than a dental clinic. In fact, it almost – and I did say almost – makes dental care glamorous.

2. Have you ever wondered what the common dental diseases and conditions look like? The Hardin Library at the University of Iowa has collected a number of links to images of periodontal disease, gum disease, and gingivitis. Oral Disease Pictures

3. Something called a Toothsponge is creating a lot of chatter in the dental community lately. Essentially it resembles a polisher as opposed to a bristled brush. Some say it will replace the toothbrush, but I tend to disagree. It doesn’t clean between the teeth at all, so unless you LOVE flossing, the Toothsponge will probable not fly. Week 2: ADA.org

Last week, “Site of the Week” honors went to Dental Watch, a site dedicated to keeping the dental industry honest, both offline and on. This week, I’m featuring ADA.org, the home of the American Dental Association.

ADA.org is among the top dental-related websites on the internet both in terms of popularity and in terms of credibility. Therefore, I consider it the perfect candidate for this honor.

ADA.org – What’s so great about it?

I like ADA.org because it’s incredibly comprehensive in nature. You would expect a professional organization like the American Dental Association to focus strictly on industry professionals. However, the consumer is such an integral part of ADA’s focus, that they’ve dedicated a significant portion of ADA.org to educating the public about oral health topics. That doesn’t in any way take away from the extensive professional resources ADA.org provides for their members.

Professional Resources

I found the vast library of professional topics to be especially well-done. You can even learn about the ADA’s official stance on a variety of topics, including: amalgam, fluoridation, and bottled water to name a few.

Consumer Resources

The Consumer resourcesection is also extremely well done. Want to learn how to select the right dentist for you? ADA.org can help you do that. Want to learn about career options in the dentistry field? They do that too. But, I think the most valuable portion of ADA.org to consumers is the large number of dental care tips they provide. You’ll learn how to clean your teeth and gums properly, and even how to choose a safe tooth whitening method. This is one of the first websites(besides Dental Heroes of course) that I’d visit with any dental care questions that you may have.

Final Thoughts

If you only take one thing away from this post, it’s that ADA.org should be one of the first stops for any type of dental care information, rather it’s consumer-related or professional in nature. ADA.org is not only a trusted resource, but it’s also among the most comprehensive. I hope you’ll find it as valuable as I do.

New Series: Site of the Week

If you’ve been following the Dental Heroes blog for a while now, you’ve probably noticed my freestyle approach to topic selection. Up to this point, I’ve been writing about anything related to dental care that’s on my mind at the time – with little direction. To be honest, I hate that I haven’t been more organized with my articles-writing. Unfortunately, this will only become more important as this blog continues to grow.

So, what am I going to do about it? Well, I’ve decided to begin writing a series each day of the week, with the next part in the series falling on the corresponding day each following week. For example, Tuesdays are going to be “Site of the week” days. Each Tuesday hereafter will also be “Site of the week” days. This way, you’ll hopefully continue to come back for the next part of each series. In any event, I think this new method of organization(hopefully not madness) will become clear within the coming weeks. If it ends up not working out, then I’ll just go back to the freestyle approach.

Site of the Week

So, without further ado, let’s get to the first new series: “Site of the week,” which will appear each Tuesday. The “Site of the week” Series is meant to highlight one dental-related site each week that I find will be of particular interest to you. The sky is the limit here. One week I might feature a specific dental organization website, and the Ripley’s Believe it or Not wacky dental facts website the next.

Week 1: Dental Watch

The inaugural site of the week honor goes to a really cool site called “Dental Watch“. I would liken Dental Watch to the watchdog of the Dental Industry. Dental Watch’s mission is to monitor the Dental Industry with regards to the following areas:

• Investigating questionable claims
• Answering inquiries about products and services
• Advising quackery victims
• Distributing reliable publications
• Debunking pseudoscientific claims
• Reporting illegal marketing
• Assisting or generating consumer-protection lawsuits
• Improving the quality of dental health information on the Internet
• Attacking misleading advertising on the Internet

As you can imagine, doing all of these things is no small task, so Dental Watch has assigned three dentists, Stephen Barrett, MD; Robert Baratz, MD, DDS; and John Dodes, DDS, the duty of operating the site.

Answers Important Dental Questions

Dental Watch is dedicated to providing consumers with the tools they need to make intelligent, informed decisions when it comes to dental care. One way Dental Watch does this is by providing factual information about such topics as: finding a dentist, caring for your teeth, and fighting gum disease.

Questionable Practices

Have a question about a particular dental practice, or trend within the Dental Industry? Dental Watch provides information about practices they consider questionable – meaning they can’t validate the effectiveness or safety of that particular practice. If you’re unsure of a practice you’ve hear about, check here first.

Disciplinary Actions

Want to know about disgraced dentists and their misdeeds? Of course you do. We all love gossip, right? Check out the “disciplinary actions” section for all the dirt you can feast your eyes on.

Stay Informed About Heated Issues

Probably my favorite feature on the Dental Watch website is their collection of links dedicated to providing factual information about issues that are hotly contested within the dental industry, such as: amalgam and fluoridation. This is a great aggregation of relevant information regarding these issues and others as well. Can’t decide which side of a debate you fall on? This is a great place to become educated, and make a decision.

Consumer Protection

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the general ignorance consumers have when it comes to their rights. This transcends dental care as well. Most people simply don’t know where to turn if they have a complaint they want to file against a particular dentist, or dental organization. Good News! Dental Watch discussed the proper way to file complaints, and provides links to state licensing boards where you can validate the legitimacy of your dentists license.

Final Thoughts

As with any industry, not everyone has your best interests in mind. The Dental Industry is no exception. To avoid these bad apples, arming yourself with the consumer-conscious information provided by Dental Watch is a great start!

The sites that made my top 5 list are professional, informational, truthful and well respected both in and out of the industry.

ADA.org is essentially the “holy grail” of dental information sites. This reputable source of information features dental care information for consumers and professionals. Their “Oral Health Topics: A to Z” section is particularly informative.

WebMD.com is another very reputable source of dental care information. This site is more comprehensive than ADA.org, and features a dental care forum, Q&A section, and the latest news from around the dentistry world.

3.Mayoclinic.com

The Mayo Clinic is the premier medical institution in the country. Therefore, you know their information is reputable. The dental section of their website isn’t overly large, but they do have a neat “Ask a Mayo Clinic Specialist” section that could prove very helpful in getting your dental care questions answered.

4. About.com Dentistry

The about.com dentistry website is a great source for dental care tips aimed at the consumer(you and I). Do you want to know about how to properly brush your teeth? How often to brush? If so, this is a good place to start.

If you want to find out information about the Industrial Revolution in Britain, or the life span of an asian beetle, chances are you’ll find an answer on Wikipedia.
